I fell into the Risen game series by default because I wanted more Gothic games. The Gothic series precipice, Gothic 3, is one of my all-time favourite games. 5 star on the obsession scale AND, the original CD version is still in my collection. It is broadly assumed that it was due to lack of Piranha Bytes involvement that every Gothic game that followed fell disastrously off the mountain top. Rumours abound that Gothic 5 is coming, now that Piranha Bytes has the Gothic license again. This of course is another story for hopefully a future preview.
I was whining about the lack of good RPG games available, and my friendly neighbourhood computer game guys introduced me to the first Risen. I liked and played both games, but definitely enjoyed the challenge of the first game more. Both games scored well by reviewers – typically between 3 and 4 stars, and both games had that familiar Gothic 3 look and feel.
Although I’m always looking, I missed the game announcement in February. Then, just a couple of days ago I read that Risen 3: Titan Lords was being released on August 12. I was super surprised and excited that yet another of my long-time favourite developers was releasing a game during the summer game void.
In Risen 3: Titan Lords, the world is suffering from the Titan Wars – abandoned by all gods and left vulnerable to the shadows rising from the ground. A young solder has lost his soul to the spawn of the skull caves that have risen, and he must conquer these “creatures of the shadow” to win back his soul. Our young soldier must choose his guild path – every choice will affect the course of the story.
“Like a carpenter with a hand-crafted piece of furniture, we put together the story, the characters and the landscape until it all fits and the player has the possibility to discover things all around the place. You can try out and find things that others might not. Exploration is the key to our game”, says Bjoern Pankratz, Project Lead at Piranha Bytes. Pre-release info tells us that Piranha Bytes has returned to their roots and is delivering a classic RPG with an authentic, vivid, charming, and diverse world. A key element will be exploration, and the freedom we will have to explore the world.
News on the Risen 3: Titan Lords website provides the background detail and information on one of the guilds our hero can join – the Guardians who protect and support the last Mages. Also on the site, are a few videos, game shots, (which look great!) as well as a downloadable toolkit for fan sites.
That’s about it for the information available pre-release, but it’s looking really promising! And, the upside of me being in the know just a tad late is that there’s only a month to wait before I can load up Risen 3: Titan Lords and play!
